How Turnitin® detects AI writing

Turnitin® added an AI writing indicator to Feedback Studio in April 2023. It is not a search of ChatGPT's servers. It is a classifier: each sentence gets a probability that it looks like model output, then those flags are rolled into a document percentage. A “40% AI” result means about 40% of the qualifying prose was flagged, not that the whole paper is 40% likely to be AI.

The tells are boring and measurable. Even sentence length. Safe word choice. Generic transitions. Public AI checkers, including the one on this page, look at the same family of signals. Perplexity and burstiness are the usual names. The longer explainer is how AI content detectors work.

None of this is their technology running here. Same job: does this draft read like a model wrote it.

What an AI score is (it is not similarity)

Two numbers show up on a Turnitin® report. People mix them up constantly.

• Similarity is plagiarism matching: overlap with papers, websites, and student papers already in the database.
• AI writing indicator is a style classifier. It does not prove who typed the text.

You can have a 4% similarity score and a high AI score. You can have the reverse. Instructors see the AI indicator in Feedback Studio, often next to the similarity color. Students usually do not.

What * means on a Turnitin® AI detection report

If the AI writing indicator shows *% instead of a number, Turnitin® estimated AI writing between 1% and 19%. They stopped showing the exact percentage in that range because it is noisy and false positives are more likely. No sentence highlights in that band either.

A gray indicator with no percentage at all means the submission could not be processed for AI: too short, unsupported language, or mostly lists and references. That is not a clean bill of health. It is “we did not score this.”

Can students see a Turnitin® AI score?

Almost never before you submit. The AI writing report lives on the instructor side of Feedback Studio. You cannot log into turnitin.com as a student and run an AI checker on your own essay. That is the whole reason this page exists.

If a professor later shares the report, you will see a percentage (or *%), highlighted sentences, and nothing about which tool supposedly wrote it. Process evidence (drafts, notes, version history) still matters more than the number.

How to check a draft

Will this match Turnitin®, GPTZero, Originality.ai?

Detectors do not share one score. GPTZero, Originality.ai, Copyleaks, ZeroGPT, Writer, and Turnitin® all train different classifiers. They often disagree on the same paragraph. A public AI checker is a rehearsal, not a guarantee.

Does Turnitin® detect humanizers?

More than it used to. The 2026 update specifically targets text that has been run through automated rewriting tools. “Humanize then submit untouched” is how people get caught. The useful version is: loosen the robotic phrasing, put your own examples back in, and keep the draft history.

How accurate is it, and what AI percentage is acceptable?

Turnitin® has claimed a document-level false-positive rate around 1 to 4%. That is not “100% accurate.” Error rates go up on non-native English, short papers, and formulaic methods sections. Vanderbilt, Johns Hopkins, several UC campuses, and others have disabled the AI feature over that.

There is no official acceptable AI percentage. Turnitin® hides 1 to 19% behind an asterisk because that band is too unreliable to show. Your syllabus is the rule. A 0% screenshot from any checker is not a hall pass.

What does Turnitin® actually check?

• Plagiarism / similarity: copied text against a huge source database. That is the original product.
• AI writing: prose sentences. Lists, references, and very short files often get skipped.
• PowerPoint and images: AI detection is a poor fit. Paste the actual sentences if you need an AI read. Similarity may still catch copied wording in some file types.
• Word limit on this page: 3,000 words per run. Split a long essay.
